Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Mobile journalism, often referred to as "MoJo," is a transformative approach to news reporting that utilizes smartphones and mobile devices for content creation, editing, and dissemination. This method has revolutionized journalism by enhancing accessibility, reducing costs, and empowering individuals to report stories from remote and underserved areas. In rural regions like Kaiama LGA, Kwara State, where traditional media infrastructure is limited, mobile journalism offers an opportunity to amplify local voices, highlight development challenges, and promote grassroots solutions (Adeyemi & Ojo, 2023). Rural development in Kaiama is hindered by inadequate infrastructure, limited access to education, and poor healthcare delivery. Mobile journalism, by enabling real-time reporting and engaging storytelling, can mobilize resources, influence policymaking, and foster community-driven initiatives (Olatunji & Yusuf, 2024). This study examines the impact of mobile journalism on rural development in Kaiama, highlighting its role as a catalyst for social change.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of mobile journalism to drive rural development, its adoption in Kaiama LGA faces barriers such as digital illiteracy, inadequate network coverage, and limited access to mobile devices. These challenges hinder the effective use of MoJo as a tool for advocacy and information dissemination. Additionally, the lack of structured training for local reporters and the absence of supportive policies exacerbate these limitations. This study investigates the impact of mobile journalism on rural development in Kaiama, addressing the barriers to its effectiveness and exploring ways to maximize its potential.

  2. What challenges hinder the adoption of mobile journalism in rural areas?
  3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of mobile journalism in rural development?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Mobile journalism does not significantly impact rural development in Kaiama LGA.
  2. H1: Challenges such as digital illiteracy limit the effectiveness of mobile journalism.
  3. H2: Providing training and infrastructure improves the impact of mobile journalism on rural development.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the transformative potential of mobile journalism in addressing rural development challenges in Kaiama LGA. By exploring its contributions and limitations, the findings will inform media practitioners, development agencies, and policymakers on how to leverage mobile journalism for sustainable development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of mobile journalism on rural development within Kaiama LGA, Kwara State, without extending to other LGAs or urban contexts.
